Jenis-jenis conjunctions dalam bahasa Inggris ada empat macam, yang dapat dibagi berdasarkan karakteristik atau penggunaannya. Jenis-Jenis conjunctions dapat digunakan sesuai dengan konsep kalimat Bahasa Inggris yang akan ditulis maupun diucapkan.

- Coordinating Conjunctions: Conjunction yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua klausa atau frasa yang setara atau memiliki tingkat penting yang sama. Contoh: “and”, “but”, “or”, “so”, “nor”, “for”, “yet”.

- Or: Do you want tea or coffee?

- Subordinating Conjunctions: Conjunction yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan klausa tergantung (subordinate clause) dengan klausa induk (main clause) dan mengindikasikan hubungan hierarki atau ketergantungan antara kedua klausa tersebut. Contoh: “because”, “although”, “if”, “while”, “since”, “before”, “after”, “unless”, “until”.
Contoh kalimat:
- Because: He stayed home because he was feeling unwell.
- Although: She went out although it was raining.
- If: If you study hard, you’ll pass the exam.
- While: He read a book while waiting for the bus.
- Since: She has lived here since she was a child.
- Before: Finish your homework before you go out.
- After: He left after the party ended.
- Correlative Conjunctions: Conjunction yang terdiri dari dua kata yang bekerja bersama untuk menghubungkan elemen-elemen dalam kalimat. Contoh: “either…or”, “neither…nor”, “both…and”, “not only…but also”.
Contoh kalimat:
- Both…and: She is both smart and funny.
- Either…or: You can have either tea or coffee.
- Neither…nor: He is neither tall nor short.
- Not only…but also: He is not only handsome but also intelligent.
- Conjunctive adverbs : sering digunakan untuk mengekspresikan hubungan sebab-akibat, kontras, urutan waktu, atau hubungan logis lainnya antara ide-ide dalam kalimat.
